How does the AI background removal work?

The tool uses @imgly/background-removal, an ONNX image segmentation model that runs via WebAssembly entirely in your browser. The model detects foreground subjects and removes the background, outputting a transparent PNG.

Why does it download 43 MB on first use?

The ONNX model file is ~43 MB and must be downloaded to your browser before processing. After the first download, it is cached by your browser — subsequent uses are instant with no re-download.

Does my image get uploaded to a server?

No. The entire process — model execution and image processing — happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your image never leaves your device.

What output format does it produce?

The output is a transparent PNG. The background is replaced with full transparency (alpha channel), which you can then place over any color or new background.

How does this compare to Remove.bg?

Remove.bg uploads your images to their servers and charges for HD downloads. Trndinn's background remover is fully local — no upload, no credits, no watermark. Quality is comparable for most subjects.
